About Walker
Everyone seems to arrive at a career in real estate via a different road. Many of my colleagues began their careers in corporate roles, in the military, in hospitality (a big thing in Santa Fe), or in some other field, but found their true calling in real estate. I’m no different in that respect. I’m a native of Houston, having attended St. John’s School and then Strake Jesuit there. In college I refused to study something practical, following my love and majoring in history at the University of Texas at Austin. Post graduation, my analytical propensities seemed to gradually steer me toward investment management, where over the next 20 years I held different types of roles with leading firms, from money markets trader to mutual fund product manager to marketing director. Indeed, investment management is what brought me to Santa Fe in 2002, when I came to work for Thornburg Investment Management, which is headquartered here.
But ever since about 1978, I’d been listening to and observing one of my parents practice real estate in Houston. When it’s that close, one tends to absorb it and understand it on a deep level. After having bought and sold several properties over the years and hearing brokers tell me “You should be in real estate; you’d be fantastic at it” I began to consider a change. I spent some time in Houston taking care of one of my parents after leaving Thornburg, and when Heather and I returned to Santa Fe, I looked at the city differently. I jumped in to residential real estate with the intent to excel. Arguably, I have done so. If I had to point to a few factors that set me apart, I’d say it’s my competitiveness (I grew up a swimmer, so I can’t shed that) and my striving to be the best in the city, whatever the market conditions, whatever the climate, whomever the client, whatever the transaction. Included in that commitment is a dedication to conducting business at the highest possible level of integrity, and doing so with grace toward colleagues and clients.
